Wireless communication involves transfer of data over a distance without the use of any physical medium. In wireless communication, the data transfer can be done over a range of distances depends on the frequency of the system used. Several kinds of wireless communication forms are in existence such as GPS, GSM, and RF etc... for specific purposes.
The GPS (Global Positioning System) is based on 24 satellites, orbiting the earth at altitudes of approximately 12,000 miles. GPS was initially developed by the United States Department of Defense (DOD), for its military requirements. Over the past several years, GPS has proven to be a very useful tool in non-military mapping applications as well. GSM, which stands for Global System for Mobile communications, is ranked as the world’s most widely used mobile phone technology. Communication system which uses GSM technology obtains wireless signals from the nearby network towers. It is approximated that 80 percent of the world uses GSM technology when placing wireless calls, according to the GSM Association (GSMA), which represents the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry. This amounts to nearly 3 billion global people.

The RF (Radio Frequency) is the mode of communication for wireless technologies of all kinds, including cordless phones, radar, GPS and radio and television broadcasts. RF technology is so much a part of our lives we scarcely notice it for its ubiquity. RF waves are electromagnetic waves which propagate at the speed of light, or 186,000 miles per second (300,000 km/s).
